And for my next trick...

"People might think I've got a rabbit to pull out of the hat. I don't.
I don't even have a hat."

NB I AM ALSO NOT IN POSSESSION OF:

A magic coin trick....

A wand....

A glamourous assistant...

A rubber chicken....

Or a vanishing candle.

Don't doubt, however, that I have something up my sleeve...

So watch this space, fuckos!!!
Love, JWH.
174 days til the next election.

I suspect the rabbit this election is the "War on School Bullies". The "War on Terror" didn't go so well, so I think he's decided to pick on people his own size for a change.
And the Prime Minister told stunned colleagues that he might be part of the problem.
Mr Howard has indicated that he, Peter Costello and Alexander Downer may have been in their jobs too long.
I've been thinking for a while - and wish I'd written it down somewhere - that if the polls didn't improve after the budget Howard would retire because his desire for a dignified exit (and therefore, somehow, an esteemed place in the party's and nation's history) would override his love of power.
Of course just quitting would look like he was deserting a sinking ship. This party room speech is his way of telling the party room to replace him, making it look like they're performing a sensible "generational change" renewal act, not a panicky deckchair shuffle.
That's your rabbit. He'll be gone before the end of June. And he's doing it in such a way to prevent Costello from becoming leader.
Sneaky little fuck.
PS: Beautiful post. x
I want Howard to stay on and get bloody annihilated at the election. And I want Maxine to win Bennelong.
History will judge the man very harshly indeed. I want him to suffer in his jocks RIGHT NOW! Well, later this year, anyway.
I agree though, Ms Fits, that he'll probably pull some racist, divisive, shonky stunt before the election, that he can deny any knowledge of later when it gets shown to be utter lies.
The man is a cunning little bastard.
Thank you, Ms Fits, well done indeed.
My only fear now is the sense of hubris and over-confidence that I can detect starting to gather amongst the forces of the Left. What might be good is a troop of cheerleaders a la the Nicorette commercial to follow Kev around reminding him of your mother's wise words. Perhaps something like the following
No, Kevin, No
No, Kevin, No
Doooooooooooon't
Fuck it up !
I can’t figure out if that's Howard on the left, or on the right…
He might say: the centre…
I might say: it doesn’t matter.
They’re both stuffed.
Howard's biggest 'trick' isn't a trick at all - it's just the fact that in consecutive elections, voters have preferred the Liberal party to any other alternative. That's called democracy, Marieke. Because you live in a very insular, blinkered community and you refuse to be friends with anyone who disagrees with your ideology, you may not understand democracy. You may think that people don't know what's good for them. Well, actually, there's no 'may' about it - it's clear that you DO think that YOU know what's good for people, even if they don't.
Howard's done a middling to good job as Prime Minister. If he loses the next election, well, good. Time for a change. Let's just hope that your mother's warning rings in his ear even after the election - after all, PMs from the union party have a grant tradition of 'fucking up' the country.
Kevin Rudd has professed not to be a socialist. How does that sit with you?
You know, you are at your best when writing about Big Brother, why Family Guy has superseded the Simpsons, about which indie underground band has your attention, or even bragging about some restaurant you spent your money in. These 'political' 'clever' posts, where you put big gaps between the same photo you've uploaded only count as 'clever' for readers with BDS, HDS or who are simply a bit below par mentally. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
So, basically: don't quit your day job. Somebody's got to earn Bob Ellis her dinner (on another point, it's positively cruel to give a cute Staffie such a revolting name).
Cloudy, you are a terrible cynic.... That is exactly what I thought too!
I think it bodes well for the good guys though. JWH running scared? It certainly looks like it.
*grand, not grant
*and the 'he' I am talking about in the second para refers to Rudd, clearly.
Yep...I think Cloudys picked it. He retires undefeated and it's all Costellos problem...Although I must admit I have this horrible feeling Howards going to hand it over to Ruddock as a final Fuck You to a nation that let him down.
I think I have a perverse desire to watch Ruddock run an election campaign, Scott. The idea of it tickles me in weird and wrong ways.
I need serious help, obviously.
Yeah...I suppose it wouldn't matter if he drinks the blood of innocents. Just as long as the economies good.
God the Libs are getting strident.
Deep breaths, Anon. Nice and slow...
Bullshit anon 2:38 these posts are the best work of Ms Fits, you just don’t agree with them.
I reckon that you are right Fits, Howard has something waiting to scare the electors. I do not know what it will be, but it will prey on the uncertainty that he has spent a decade fostering in the voters minds and it will be focussed on the individual's self interest at the expense of any contribution to broad community interest. Further I reckon he will be re-elected on the back of whatever this is. So relax anon, you will still be able to fuck over the help in a middling to good kind of way next year.
Yep, Cloudy picked it like a nose.
I am however with Meva on her wish for election night. I want to see him bawl like a baby. I want to hear him spit out a speech of defeat. Were they talking about Malcolm Fraser's defeat the other day on telly, the one where his chin quivered? I want to see Howard's chin quiver.
Fits, are you after a Ruddock vs Rudd battle simply for the wordplay potential?
I hadn't even thought of that, BG. I just wanted to see Philip on the telly trying to convince people that he wasn't a flesh-eating zombie from the planet Zorg.
I don't think Howard will retire before the election. It will look cowardly, and there's no way Howard will want his last act in politics to chicken out this close to an election.
As for what his trick will be, these comments are the first step. His conservative's call to arms the other day was a way to say, "Look, conservatives, we're hard done by. We're going to be swamped by these crazy lefties who are going to oppress us as they did when Keating was around, and make us poor. I mean, come on you white middle class, do you really want to become politically meaningless", or the like. It's worked pretty well for a decade, so why change tactic?
The problem is that Rudd has jettisoned the left of his party and is fighting for Howard's Battlers, banking on the fact that the left has nowhere else to go.
Howard may not have any rabbits, but it's too early to tell whether his dog whistle has stopped working. (But let's hope it has.)
In fact, given Ruddock's infamous likeness to Emperor Palpatine, I wonder if we could cast Rudd as a young, rebellious.. wait a second!
Excellent posts, Fits.
Cloudy - but isn't he. That was my first thought, too; "If I'm going down, I'm taking a few of you fuckers with me ... starting with YOU, Costello!"
Anon @ 2:38 - and I see you doing such a terrific job of dealing with Ms Fits who doesn't agree with you. Pots. Kettles. Fits talking about telly bores my tits off. Fits getting feisty about the politic stuff inspires me. Don't waste your vitriol, anon ... it's like pushing poo uphill with a pointy stick.

Well that's the tricky bit, Freehugs - getting it to look like the party room is replacing him against his own wishes, but also like he is grudgingly accepting their wise decision for smooth generational change and fresh blood. He'd prefer the Libs to stay in power of course, but priorities are priorities and staying on won't improve their chances.
Of course those left behind will still have to have some nasty, spiky shit up their sleeves as well.
Don't Fuck It Up, Kevin.
He'll still most likely win. Im not convinced that people are for change.
Well, to be fair, he has Pru Goward, who may fulfil the "glamorous assistant" part of the equation. And, come to think of it, the rubber chicken part.
But we probably shouldn't talk about Pru and John. Because then we get back to being tickled in weird and wrong ways...
Anon 2:38 may like to mull over the fact that pretty much everyone believes people don't know what's good for them, and they do. As a matter of fact, that's what Howard is telling the Australian public right now.
Did Howard just call me fuckos?
it's just the fact that in consecutive elections, voters have preferred the Liberal party to any other alternative.
You've shown your own ignorance, Anon. Labor has always outvoted "the Liberal Party". They can only be in power via a coalition with the Nationals. Idiot.
Also, in the previous election, I belive a majority of Australians voted Labor, just not in a majority of seats.
Very clever.
I love it when anonomous posters grace the pages of RYWHM attacking Ms Fitz.
At least Ms Fitz has the courage to put her name to what she writes and her opinions, you gutless turds...
Anyway, for what it's worth, 3AW's rumor file this morning had a contribution from a caller who suggested that approximately 3 boats carrying potential asylum seekers had been turned away from Darwin by Customs authorities in the last week. The caller wanted to know why such incidents hadn't been covered in "the meeja".
Fortunatley Ross and John paid it no mind other than to say that they would "follow it up".
There are still enough numpties in the marginal seats that Howard can deal another race card out to, make no mistake about it.
I look forward to the day that National Security becomes an election issue again. I want Rudd/Swan/Faulkiner/Tanner/Gillard to have the opportunity to ask the Coconut; "if your party is so concerned about National Security, why do you have a former suburban GP running Defence and a religious zealot looking after the Health portfolio?" Answer THAT and stay fashionable
Hey Suave the Cat
I'm curious about your claim (which has been made by plenty of others on here too) that "anonymouses" are gutless and hiding behind their anonymity.
Commenting under the name "Suave the Cat" is not much different from commenting under the name "Anonymous"! Sure, you come on here regularly and by using the same name each time we know which posts come from you. In that sense, I guess you could say that you have built a “personality” up for Suave the Cat … but it's not like you're putting your name to your opinions, either.
I realise you were comparing anon’s profile to Ms Fits’ and obvs. that’s completely different (and that may be all you meant). It’s just weird that so many commenters and bloggers believe that by consistently using the same pseudonym online, they are owning up to their comments!
Yes I want to get rid of fuckhead Johnny as badly as the next lefty.
But I do get a bit nervous at what seems to be a "get Labour in and it'll be sunshine and lollipops" idea.
Yes get rid of the Coalition, but how much of the damage of a decade of Howard & company will be fixed by team Rudd? For example, will there be major changes to the Coalition's draconian Welfare to Work package introduced last year?
I hope so, but doubt it.
The market will not save us.
Anonymous, yes democracy at work indeed, but the implication of your post is plain wrong. You imply that because JH has won elections, the inherent goodness of democracy means that all people in Australia who vote do so on the basis of true informed consent, and that hoodwinking or 'tricks' do not occurr. Thats not how it works. Each side has a significant proportion of rusted on voters, to get over the line all you have to do is hoodwink around 2-5 per cent of the electorate in marginal seats. Are you honestly saying that not even 2-5 percent of the Australian electorate are immune to being hoodwinked, or having their base fears pandered too? Come on fella.
It really shits me when right wingers trot out the old 'oh don't be so patronising and elitist toward the Australian people'. We are'nt, the vast majority of Australians know what they want and vote accordingly, left or right. But suggesting that 5 per cent of the electorate is xenophobic, insecure, racist, envious, frightened, ignorant, really isn't a stretch.
Any, Hockey and Howard say the same when it suits. Apparently the people don't like workchioces because they have been hoodwinked by a nasty union ad campaign, not because their workplace conditions are being eroded.
Also, I too live in an insular left leaning world anon. I know a lot of different kinds of people, I've had 3 careers so far. As I've posted in a previous fits blog, the older and wiser I get the more convinced I am that Liberal tend be either a) not very bright or b) greedy.
Moreover, I've tried a couple of times to at least make the aquaintance of conservatives, but as far as I'm concerned, they are, by definition, extremely dull, conformist, and in spite of a facade of charity, intolerant.

Hi anon #1.
I'm of the opinion that if someone comments using a Blogger Pseudonym - with deliberatley provocative opinions/statements - then the person making the statements accepts a certain accountability for what they say.
If I post something as Suave that people don't agree with, then people can look up my profile and give me hell on my [crappy] blogs, if they so choose to.
Of course, people choose to contribute using the anon. tag for a number of reasons and good on 'em! In the past, some of the best comments/Friday QNA's and confessions have come via the anon I.D.
A trend is developing, however, that the more personal the attack on the host of this blog, the more likely it is that the anonymous tag will be at the heading of their post. It is tiresome, predictable and asinine.
I have no problem with anonymous posters. I used to post anonymously. I do have a problem with hit-and-run commenters who drag out the "lefty-trash, can-give-it-but-can't-take-it, can't-accept-people-disagreeing-with-you, plurality-of-views,Ms Fitz can't write ..." schtick. I suggest that they FARKOFF
G'day Ms Fits, This is off topic I know, but after reading your lament in the Green Guide today I wish to send you some football writing that you will love. I couldn't agree with you more, by the way - especially being a Saints girl! What is your email address? I probably should put this in Fri Q & A, but wanted to write now while I remember and still have a few brain cells.. And well said Suave.
Yes, well said Suave.
In my opinion, Anonymous posts are fine, as are semi-anonymous monikers like "suave the cat" and "the.monuments.we.build".
However- for an Anonymous Coward to post offensively AND use Ms Fits' REAL FIRST NAME, while maintaining their own anonymity. That is taking things too far..
