TUE22MAR

Another quiet night 'round at Daniel O' Connor's place:

How much of a dirty stopout is that Kathy Donnelly? 'Oh, here's Daniel, asking about his dad. Must give Tony a call.' (Pause) 'Shit, that's right. It was a Wednesday wasn't it? Must give Eric a call.'

The poor little bastard's still out there somewhere.

932 days til the next election.

And there goes the first guffaw for the day!

And it sounds like you know something we don't know! Eric? Eric Abetz? No wonder poor ol' Kathy got confused! The seventies was probably a blur of Liberal Party todgers...

The emotional loss that Tony Abbott must be feeling would be heartbreaking. I don't care where his politics lie, the man deserves some sympathy.

I’m inclined to agree with xulsolar23. His politics completely suck but Tony Abbott looks like a man genuinely defeated by this.

Perhaps if he hadn't been so gung-ho about foisting his insipid moral politics upon the rest of society I may feel a pang of sympathy for Ol' Jughead.

As it is, I'm afraid I lie on the side of callous this morning.

good to have you back, i am inclined to agree with you, and if he had not used this as a political win then maybe the fall out would not have been so nasty. live by the spin, get spun by the spin, dinner with you and the sherriff soon, or something that peeps in their thirties do, swingers party maybe. i'm with you, fits.

i am having trouble finding any sympathy for a man on a crusade against the hard-won inherent right of women to control their own lives.

a federal politician for that matter, blinded by his own religious zealousness.

and a man who would dare to use the paternity of a young man as a political tool to prove an archaic point.

nope, sorry, can't find much sympathy there.

22Mar11:10

Does that actually mean he does have another sprog out there? Or does this mean ol' bigears HAS no adopted out kiddie and the rest of the world can breathe easy and he can withdraw his "personal experience" tears now?

From what I read, he believed he had an adpoted kid because he shagged Kathy Donnelly about 9 months before she gave birth to DO'C and then he was adopted out. So if he's not Abbott's, then Abbott has no long lost anything. Make sense?

As Patrick Swayze said to Demi Moore in Ghost - "Ditto"

I sort of feel bad for enjoying the drama as much as I have. Quite literally, anyone else in the world would have earned my sympathy (and truth be told, Fuckface Tony has a smidgeon - a SMIDGEON - of it).

I mean, Christ almighty - I am the sort of softie bleeding heart lefty who actually CRIES IN SYMPATHY when I see a dad on Ricki Lake or Maury or Springer who breaks down after discovering their child was actually fathered by another man.

But as everyone's said, he used the reunion as a "political football" and seeing the whole thing blow up in his face does make me smile in a hearty fashion. Lefties can't be saintly world-savers all the time (ahem... a joke)

I agree that there is no mistaking that Abbott manipulated the situation and Daniel to play a part in his fucked up game of political portfolios. I want to kick the TV in every time I hear the re-hashing of the quote “…and the first thing he said was ‘Thanks for having me’”. Grrr, he is not saying this because he is glad he wasn’t aborted, you stupid fuck!

But the viewing of a broken man walking the steps to his house last night made me feel sad and sympathetic that what was originally a fucked up situation is now palatably worse and embarrassing for all of them.

But hey, I have PMS and felt sooky for the spider I swatted in the shower this morning so ask me again next week and I may have a different view.

If Tony Abbott hadn't been such a manipulative cunt maybe I'd think about giving some sort of toss about his 'heartbreak'

At least Daniel gets the chance of having a decent man for a father now instead of the fucktard that he'd thought supplied the sperm.

Let's be glad for Daniel O'Connor.

Well, "decent man" might be a stretch, and although it'd be fantastic to discover that your dad ISN'T Tony Abbott (which would indeed be terrifying) it'd be nice to find it out in some way other than "your mother was a bit of a slut who was sleeping with another guy secretly on the side".

I preface this by once again stating my contempt for the current government.

I can't imagine what a loss like this would feel like... I suppose it would probably be one of the worst things that could ever happen to me. Tony Abbot has been criticised for his percieved lack of sympathy with regard to the abortion issue. So let's not be hypocritical now.

He has shown that the standard he expects of others he is likewise prepared to meet himself. Like him or not... be prepared to learn something from that.

Best outcome would be for a rush of DNA tests as the members (excuse the pun) of the two-inch brigade (aka The Liberal Party) wonder about the true parentage of their own sprogs.

Wouldn't it be great to find out that half of the Liberal's "sons & daughters" were actually sired by some well hung 70s lefty?

I had a bizarre reaction when i first heard about this. I let out a guilty giggle. But i laugh when kids fall over and they have, for a split second, that facial expression of 'i don't know whether to cry or keep running'.
No one has come out of this one a winner. But sometimes, even though it isn't right, it is comforting to see evil people kicked in the gut. Interesting that he says 'crazy seventies' in light of Bob Ellis' book being pulped after he threatened to sue for suggesting Costello, his wife and Abbott were in a triangle. Crazy conservatives!

I hardly think that Abbott was the epitome of ethical consistency: he didn't want to marry her, but didn't want her to abort. He didn't want to be a part of the kids life, but didn't want to feel responsible for its prevention. Brilliantly selfish.

Of course because we all hate him so much, all those people who called him a cad for abandoning the mother of his child will be forgiven for just moving right along and not apologising, or even admitting they were wrong.

And the left can collectively forget how many of its supposedly socially progressive members suddenly became fans of shotgun weddings for a short while.

'Oh it's ok to be heartless and vicious and switch views according to political expedience, 'cause he's a prick.'

Really? That should win back the public consciousness for the left in no time, eh?

And while I don't judge Kathy Donnelly for being a bit liberal with her pleasures, it was really wonderful of her to let him stew on his 'lost son' for 27 years without easing his mind by saying 'there are other possibilities'...

I don't believe I ever passed judgement on whether Tony was a 'cad' or not. My take on the matter was that it would totally suck arse to find out Tony Abbott was your father and then it would totally rule to find out he wasn't. Simple.

"Poetic justice refers to a person receiving punishment intimately related to their crime or misdeed."

http://encyclopedia.laborlawtalk.com/poetic_justice

Abbott's callow treatment of Kathy Donnelly while she was pregnant with (what they both thought was) their child resulted in her having to relinquish her baby - a loss that has eaten away at her for 27 years. And then when they were reunited with their son, he had the cheek to turn it all into a "wonderful story" about how all pregnant teenage girls should surrender their uteruses (and their babies) over to the service of worthy married couples looking to adopt.

Now Abbott - previously carrying a vague catholic shame/macho pride for "sowing some wild oats" gets to taste a tiny smidgen of that loss.

Ooh yeah, it hurts - funny that! And I guess no-one else involved in this saga would have suffered? Of everyone involved, Abbott is the least deserving of sympathy.

The real scary part is the membership of the young Liberals, will swell. Many will join. Bob Ellis you were right all along. Thing were much wilder there in the 60's.
Young Labor fumbling for condoms and dealing with feminists! Liberals riding free and finding out 25years later. It has to be good.

Martin, he's still a cad, regardless of whose DNA it was. He thought Daniel was his son, and he abandoned him.

And Ben, this doesn't establish Abbott as a man of his convictions - he abandoned what he thought was his child. How terribly brave. The honourable thing to do, if you opposed abortion, would have been to try to be a part of the child's life. Tough for an aspiring conservative politician, perhaps, but at least it'd be taking responsibility.

Oops, sorry, I forgot. Taking responsibility is not something conservatives believe in any more. The buck stops somewhere else.

"The honourable thing to do, if you opposed abortion, would have been to try to be a part of the child's life"

Really? So we've moved from adoption shouldn't be made a football of the abortion debate to adoption is dishonourable?

And you're still basically saying you endorse shotgun weddings, which I find odd for a social progressive.

Mr Lefty... I completely disagree with you about what constitutes the honourable thing. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think you're being an oportunist on this one. It's like you've gone from being liberal to being ultra conservative in one easy move - and why? So you can have another reason to hate the man?

...I would have thought several would be enough.

Abbott's 'wild' LABOR PARTY youth is described in Lenore Taylor's profile of him of May 2004 Australian Fin Review magazine - on prize night at St.Ignatius College, as the Monk accepted his prize he suggested to the prizegiver Sir! John Kerr, that the night was boring and they should go together 'to a Labor Party rally in town'.
Breaking News tonight at The Australian online: I got a laugh from the psych who said Tony definitely needs counselling for the LOSS he has suffered. If this is the case then spare a thought for truly grief-stricken young girls separated unwillingly from infants whose arrival did not suit the requirements of their partners/families.
