I am now a racist.

Once again the outrage of the Muslim world stuns us in the West into disbelief. I ask myself what is in the minds of people who cannot tolerate any questioning of their ways, their society and their religion? How can people hold whole nations to account for the actions of a few newspaper editors? Where is the balance in their judgements, where is the reason without emotion?

As a formerly tolerant and open-minded Australian who used to believe that we can accept and live with each others' differences, I now strongly believe that Western traditions, beliefs and freedoms are incompatible with the Muslim world. I ask now, why do Muslims wish to live in Western societies if they find our freedoms so abhorrent? I ask, what do they bring to our society but venom and anger? I ask, why should we allow them into our tolerant society?

I am now a racist.

So who is he racist against? Just muslims or all "darkies"? Or will he be firebombing synagogues too? Idiot hasn't thought his turn out very well.

I presume he's walked into work today and thrown the contents of the Asian guy sitting next to him's desk on the floor and gone "THAT'S FOR TAKING OUR JOBS SLOPE!"

Either that or he didn't expect it to be printed and now looks like a complete cock to the entire nation. Cheers James.

As is hinted at by Adam 1.0 above, James does not appear to appreciate that Islam is not a race.

James is not a racist as far as one can tell from the letter (except, perhaps, for that last sentence). But I don't know of a word for what he is. That is to say, a person who dislikes someone based on their religion. Religist?

And to be honest, whatever he is, I am probably one too. Except in my case I dislike anyone who is religious. Is that a sin?

The thing is, the body of his letter is quite reasonable. It's reasonable and even important to be asking those questions right now. If you're not asking questions a bit like these, I'm worried about the unshakeability of your beliefs.

Of course, his questions are riddled with problematic generalisations. And he hasn't bothered to consider the possibility that there are Muslim people who could provide intelligent answers to those questions before he's made up his mind. Not necessarily justifications, because the violent responses are at best only tenuously justifiable, but certainly intelligent answers and corrections.

Worse, on the basis of these unanswered questions (if we are to take him at his word) he has considered it necessary to identify as a "racist", which is depressing and what's more, fucking stupid.

(And when I say "at best only tenuously justifiable", I would add that in my view they are completely unjustifiable.)

I think the thing is the inherent hypocrisy of his statement, "How can people hold whole nations to account for the actions of a few newspaper editors?"...when he is holding an entire religion to account for the actions of a few of its adherents.

I think we could all do well to pause and remember Racey's great contribution to world peace:

C'mon baby lay your love on me
Ooh baby let your love flow free now
C'mon baby lay your love on me

If only James could like a little bit more like a Raceyist.

What's weird is that I find James's argument eerily similar to this article I read by a 'moderate Muslim': http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/0,1518,398853,00.html

You know the thing is I think that letter from James in The Age is really important, despite the many contradictions and the final "racist" tag he labels himself with.
As Sherriff points out, his comments are at least inconsistent or possibly hypocritical. This makes it all the more important because he describes himself as "formerly tolerant and open-minded". Maybe he would have never ever considered labelling himself as a "racist", but he feels the need now. It sounds like an emotional response from the writer, not an intellectual response. I think it is a "real experience" that a lot of people are going through. People are just starting to say to themselves "I hate these people/I fear them/I don't want them". I'm not saying it's right. I'm saying that I think that it is actually happening. This is how people are reacting. Certain governments don't mind demonising certain nations, and the media loves a riot, and the pressure of constant media bombardment causes people to react emotionally. Words are distorted. Yesterday on the radio and on the internet firecrackers and stones hurled at the Danish embassy by a couple of hundred in Tehran became "petrol bombs". No-one mentioned that the other 12.6 million who live in Tehran weren't hurling stones and firecrackers at the embassy. Is this quickly becoming the major issue of our time? Perhaps we should have paid more attention to former Iranian President Khatami's call to a "conversation of cultures", which was generally scoffed at by the US. A golden opportunity lost to support the progressives? The response of a small number of muslims makes it easier to demonise a whole range of different people and cultures when you're preparing for another war.

I reckon I'm with you, buzz. I work in radio and do a daily 'front pages of the newspapers' thingo. I find more and more that I have to selectively edit what the front pages actually say because some have become so fearsomely editorialised and emotive. Like Sydney's Daily Telegraph, which uses the front page to dictate what today's news will be, rather than accurately reporting what today's news actually IS.

Whilst I don't think I'm racist, and I certainly try to give more than a modicum of thought to my own responses to issues, I do find myself questioning intolerance ... from all quarters ... whether Muslim, Christian, Labor, Liberal, black, white or brindle.

I agree with Joseph's comment: It's reasonable and even important to be asking those questions right now. If you're not asking questions a bit like these, I'm worried about the unshakeability of your beliefs.

So, OK, some really bloody extreme nutters have been doing some really horrid stuff. They claim to have been provoked. That applies just as much to the US as they do to any Muslim extremist. Bush, Cheney and friends seem pretty farkin extreme to me.

And you know what, at least we're talking about it.

Don't let your dogma piss on the wheels of your karma (apologies).

Cheers.

Well, I am well and truly confused...

We can pick and choose who we allow into our tolerant society?

Fuck language is a great thing, isn't it?

They should all go back to Muslimistan or wherever they came from... er... even if they weren't born there...

I am most surprised that someone so bereft of coherent thought can actually address an envelope or compose an email.

Wasn't it channel 10 that had the motto "We don't just report the news. We make the news."?

racialist tolerance,

Maybe one point is that if enough people on all sides as you say are "bereft of coherent thought" displaced by emotion, it makes them far more malleable to the agendas of idealogues and those with ambitions..

And that's what frightens me, buzz. And I'm sure it does to most of the folks who love reading RYWHM when Fits lets loose.

Where, oh where, is there a truly free press? Of is a 'free press' one that just happens to suit your personal philosophies and political leanings? Where is there a media which really reports THE NEWS. Without fear, without favour.

I guess I have some sympathy for the letter writer who has earned the ire of a few here ... because he tried, however ineptly, to tell us what he really thinks. Whilst Fits can encapsulate her feelings and opinions in the most glorious manner with the least words possible, we can't all do that. But we've got to listen anyway. Even if we don't like hearing it.

:)

buzz, I completely agree, which is why I no longer have any emotional response to the news, except occasional anger at the media for attempting to manipulate me in such a blatant fashion.

It comes down, once again, to the Simpsons. in one episode, they were debating the moral of the story. In the end, they decided that perhaps there was no moral, that was "all just a bunch of stuff that happened".

Most of what the news reports is just a bunch of stuff that happened, it's the spin they put on it that makes it news. Only history will tell us what is important and what isn't. In most cases, there is time to wait and see.

God, I'm sounding more like my grandfather every day.
