Joh or no?
Quotes by/about Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen or Nazi rantings by members of the Patriotic Youth League*?
1. "I'm just about being proud of our culture, like other people are of theirs."
2. "The cultivation of conservative values and politics is urgently needed today to help secure Australia as an independent and free nation."
3. "Red is red wherever it is - and I don't trust any of them."
4. "Eugenics is the crucial science needed to free our people."
5. "Aborigines are very wealthy people, like the sheikhs of the Middle East."
6. "Free Pauline!"
7. "I often see yuppie degenerates with black babies as a fashion accessory. Less abortions for whites and adoption of local white children should be priority."
8. "We had the best nation on earth and lost it. We must reclaim our heritage or Eureka Spirit become militant again and achieve the identity, independence & freedom for our future generations."
9. "He's not a racist. Why, he's had Aborigines working for him."
10. "Australian - An identity determined by ethnicity not paperwork."
11. "Too many cooks and not enough Indians spoil the golden egg."
Remember, kids! SJBP was not a genial old feller with a love of scones and sweeping plains. He was a vicious, corrupt bigot and should be remembered as such.
Lest we forget, fuckface.

#5's a kicker, isn't it? I quoted it all weekend.
Along with a few others here, it was listed in Mungo MacCallum's like-minded article in the Age.
Beattie for one has been way too generous in his eulogising.
Okay, my guesses:
Joh: 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11
PYL: 1, 4, 6, 8, 10
Erm... those seem like rather regular intervals.
He had a policy that blacks couldn't buy or rent too much land, in a bizarre racist reversal of land rights.
I won't trackback to my post on this and push my luck, rather I just suggest you Google "Koowarta", then look it up on www.austlii.edu.au
High Court case, upheld validity of commonwealth racial discrimination law and rendered the policy illegal.
Save it up for when some redneck claims he wasn't racist...
So Fitz... when someone you don't agree with dies, why do you do these hugely derogatory eulogies? I'm seriously not stirring you at all. I'm legitimately curious. I can see it being really hurtful to people who read it and I just don't know why you do it.
What can one say of a country in which the media expends so much attention and words eulogising a second-rate embarrasment whose contribution -if you can call it that- is limited to Queensland as opposed to someone who genuinely made a difference to the nation as Al Grasby did.
Al Grasby gave this country something tangible the effects of which we still feel every single day of our lives - right here, right now: think multiculturalism, think SBS.
Instead, we get a tax-payer funded state fucking funeral for a gibberish spewing gerrymanderer.
"Lest we forget, fuckface."
ROFL.
Hey Ben... do you really think fans of Joh Bjelke-Peterson would read this blog? Ergo, who would be hurt by this post (which quotes Sir Joh extensively, and only gets meanie towards the end)?
I'm seriously not stirring you at all. I'm legitimately curious.
Oh, and my answers are:
Joh: 3, 5, 6, 9, 11
PYL: 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 10
The 'Free Pauline' quote messed me up, but I think it's a Johism. It really could be either.
No, I changed my mind.
'Free Pauline' has to be PYL.
Joh probably thought she should get out of politics and back behind the deep fryer, where women belong.
I agree with Joseph - there are those out there who, post-death, paint figures like Bjelke-Petersen as flawless individuals whose contributions to society were nothing but progressive and honourable.
Just because the old feller carks it doesn't mean he can't be held accountable for the aforementioned vicious acts of bigotry.
Perhaps all those people he hurt through being a fucking cunt may not mind a little irreverency on a day like today.
I think it was Ch.9 news that ended its story on JBP last night by saying that they had contacted a lot of people for a comment but none of them could find anything nice to say so wouldn't say anything. Like, maybe, "evil, thuggish, corrupt old scumfuck who richly deserved his slow and painful death". I thought that was nicely restrained of everyone. Hope it's only temporary.
JBP: 1, 3, 4, 5, 9, 11
PYL: 2, 6, 7, 8, 10
"Just because the old feller carks it doesn't mean he can't be held accountable for the aforementioned vicious acts of bigotry."
No... it doesn't. That's true. But you're not merely holding him accountable. You're marking the occasion of his death with an attack on the man. And that's a little different. I don't feel the need to get sentimental about him or romanticise his life in any way. But there are times when it's best just to stay silent I think.
Perhaps now is such a time for me. But I don't know... and I'm about to get honest on your ass so be gentle. But I think about a relative of mine who's close to death... and who's said their share of controversial stuff in their time the likes of which you and many of your readers would probably scoff at. But I love them more than pretty much anybody... and I know if I read this sort of stuff about them it would just break my heart. Regardless of whether or not it's true to the person who wrote it.
So anyways...
Now's a good time to talk about it because he's in the news, which makes it comment on current events. And all we owe him is the truth, nothing more.
By the way, the use of "Sir" on the front of his name is a total misnomer, because the "knighthood" was for "Services to Parliamentary democracy". How much of a fucking joke is that?
Well, the timing is not accidental. The point is that when a public figure dies, their legacy is publicly appraised, and mythology tends to mix with the actual record.
Sympathy and misdirected goodwill keep those with better memories silent or platitudinous while supporters remould his abuses of power into something palatable -- not so bad really. The indifferent and those who weren't around at the time will swallow it whole, and fail to stop it next time, unless someone pops the bubble. "Fuckface" and "scumfuck" are a little over the top, but at least they extend the spectrum just enough that the middle -- where people usually go looking for the truth -- points toward a fairly unpleasant and morally dubious old man.
Just because the old feller carks it doesn't mean he can't be held accountable for the aforementioned vicious acts of bigotry.
Perhaps all those people he hurt through being a fucking cunt may not mind a little irreverency on a day like today.
Very good Ms Fits.
So being a ‘fucking cunt’ who hurts people is your criteria for dancing on someone’s grave.
Unfortunately, a Google search didn’t bring back any results for your ‘irreverent’ Uday Hussein or Yasser Arafat eulogies. Perhaps you can help me with a link?
"You're marking the occasion of his death with an attack on the man."
While others mark the occassion of his death by telling lies about him?
Should they, using the shield of "respecting those who grieve", be allowed to get away with spreading lies?
What are you even DOING here ajbarnes, you TEDIOUS DULLARD?
I note also that Uday Hussein was hardly feted as a hero across mainstream media updon his death. Nor was Yasser Arafat.
Dearest ajbarnes,
You adorable little po-faced cuntknuckle. You hate everything Ms Fits writes, and yet you keep coming back - astonishing. That's shows real dedication to the cause of being a wanker.
When someone is behaving like an irritating Liberal-supporting haemoroid round these parts, the tradition previously had been to fix 'em, fix 'em good - by assessing and criticising their blog....
*spits tobaccy*
*looks up in the sky, raises one eyebrow quizically and watched a vulture circle*
Silly petty pointless blog politics.
But dude, please. I can't even bring myself to mock your blog, it's such a painfully dull place. Whether you agree or disagree with Fits, at least she's remotely interesting. The only interesting thing you've said on your blog went along the lines of "Ms Fits presumably a play on words for misfits" - hahahahahahahahahaha. Brilliant. Such insight! Such wit! I mean, I hope you are taking the piss but christ almighty, I suspect you appear to be as clever as a lump of wood dipped in poo.
Fuck me dead. I can't believe I directed so much time addressing you. My heart hurts. I sincerely no one else wastes their time bothering to even acknowledge your sad little attempts to gain notoriety, Ms Fits especially. She's got babies to kill and puppies to kick, you know. Goodbye!
*waves in friendly Beverley Hillbillies manner*
I heart you, Jess.
So true.
Thanks for that spray Jess.
Yes, I do hate almost everything Ms Fits writes but far from being the sign of a "wanker", reading stuff you disagree with is a positive and worthwhile passtime. I also read Darp, Loewenstein, Quiggan and a few other left leaning bloggers. It's not so much the content of Ms Fits writing that irritates me but the mean spirited way it's expressed. Yes, anyone with half a brain and a memory knows that Joh could be an old bastard. But he's dead now and I don't see the point of spitting on his grave. I have made similar comments on a conservative blog in response to some mean spirited, anti- Al Grassby commentary .
Far from being a "sad little attempt to gain notoriety", my blog is simply a means of collating online opinion and ideas for my own future reference. I couldn't care less if anyone else reads it, let alone gains entertainment value from it.
Irritating Liberal-supporting haemoroid, now signing off. Goodbye!
"While others mark the occassion of his death by telling lies about him?
Should they, using the shield of "respecting those who grieve", be allowed to get away with spreading lies?"
...No. They shouldn't. Neither camp should view someones death opportunistically. People shouldn't sentementalise the guy any more than I think they should celebrate his death.
Joh: 2, 3, 7, 11.
PYL: 1, 4, 5, 8, 10.
Not sure about the rest.
"Thanks for that spray Jess."
Pleasure.
Must apologise though for the length and general mentalness of it though. I'm more than a tad sleep deprived and I'm unsure what I wrote even made sense.
Really though, complaining incessantly about how a blogger writes is like complaining there's too much Indian food at an Indian restaurant, or you hate the taste of tequila while playing lip sip suck. It is what it is. Dig it if you like it, avoid it if you don't.
Faretheewell, I'm off to sleep and relax. In any case, Ms Fits certainly doesn't require any defending - vigourous or well-intentioned as it might be.
Bye!
PYL: 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10
The rest are Joh-Joh...
Jeez... If I got any wrong, I swear I'll eat my official ZOG baseball cap.
If there is a god, he would have killed that old pig off with a painful, cancerous death years ago! I'm glad the old fucker's dead.
Johnny Nemo
Ms Fits and/or Jess please email me : plank_walker@lycos.com when and if either of you ever have an orginal thought.
I'm available anytime!
Adolf Hitler is also dead, and Pol Pot and Christopher Skase - so don't say anything mean-but-true about them either okay? and I would add Ceucescu only I can't spell his name.
From crikey.com.au newsletter (april 26):
12. Sir Joh obits? Don’t you worry about them
Political correspondent Christian Kerr writes:
There’s no need to plough through acres of newsprint to find out about the late Sir Johannes Bjelke-Petersen. He said everything you need to know in one brief exchange with Clive James in an ABC series back in 1986. Even the circumlocution was perfect:
JAMES: Are you a fascist dictator?
JOH: Some people say I am, Clive, but I think I’m a loving, kind one.
just blog hopped onto your site and I have to say, I like it...
I was only thinking the other day that I would like more readers of my blog.....but now I am wondering if I really do - seems to bring just as many enemies as friends!
I guess I should add my point of view on Joh - I dont think at all that he deserves a state funeral, or the recognition he is getting...he wasnt a hero
....but of course i am not happy that he is dead, or that he and his family had to suffer like that.
I just dont think the job he did with running QLD should be celebrated...lets just try to forget it!!
peace

Maybe if you're in a private conversation with a greiving family member, but i think it's different when you're talking in a public space.
Anyway, wouldn't he be *proud* of the things we hate him for?
