For the unaware, Only Olivia is a fan club started online by two fans, Helen and Richard, over ten years ago. Olivia has never officially sanctioned any fan club throughout her career. As a result, multiple fan sites of varying quality have proliferated on the internet for her. OO is the only one which Olivia has loosely affiliated herself with. At one time, she tolerated meeting OO fan club members backstage and has occasionally appeared at OO's annual fan conventions.

Helen and Richard decided to delegate the management of the fan club to a small clique of fans. Unfortunately, the club has been terribly mismanaged since this occurred. For an annual fee of $40, fans receive a very amateur newsletter of outdated news and other miscellany about Olivia. That's it - none of the fee goes to the maintenance of the website which is graciously funded by Helen. Recently, the club tried to improve what if offered fans by creating a Members Only section featuring "exclusive" fan artwork and photographs of Olivia to better justify its exorbitant fee. The club also holds monthly contests for more homemade Olivia junk. Otherwise, anyone can access the trove of memorabilia on the site and can request a password to post to the Message Board without paying membership. Most fans wisely choose to save their $40 since most and the best parts of the site are absolutely free. Many fans question what exactly their annual dues are being spent on. Can the printing and postage of six annual newsletters really cost that much? Worse, the newsletters are often late in being published and distributed further diminishing their timeliness.

Many fans are also frustrated by how the club is managed particularly the Message Board. Oh, sure ... the Message Board, like any fan site, is filled with fanatics who obsess far too much about every minutia of Olivia's personal life and career. But, the Board's tyrannical leader, Melissa, disapproves when others usurp her "power." For example, check out the recent post by Xanadude about Olivia's television appearances to promote her new Christmas CD. While other members thanked Xanadude for the update, Melissa quickly went into defense mode insisting fans should instead refer to the News section - even if it is not as up to date as the Message Board - for anything new about Olivia. You could almost picture her stomping her feet and crying "Damn that Xanadude!"

Basically, if Melissa cannot be involved or take credit, it should not be shared on the Board. When "Xanadu" opened on Broadway, Melissa did not want anyone to post about the show since, according to her, it was not related to Olivia. (Would an Olivia fan even know about "Xanadu" on Broadway if it was not for the film "Xanadu" that starred Olivia?) Why? Probably because Melissa could not travel to New York to see the show or - horrors! - fears the show mocks Olivia. (Olivia herself thoroughly enjoyed the show and the show's cast all have expressed adoration of Olivia then and now.)

Olivia herself could eliminate so much of this nonsense by simply starting a long overdue OFFICIAL fan club. For X dollars per year, send out a newsletter with some exclusive goodies (pictures, web links, etc.) . Fans get a decent product which she and her management can have full control over and all fans are treated equitably. Leave Only Olivia and comparable sites to just be collections of memorabilia where fans can go and discuss whether her new song is any good, how her hair looks and other such silliness without all of the politics, speculation and other BS that OO members and other fans encounter now. Being an Olivia fan can once again be a pleasant diversion enjoyed equally by all of her fans.

No, this post isn't bitter or biased toward Melissa. Gee, nobody will be able to figure that one out!

Just one post? Try posts - plural! You would think Helen would curtail Melissa's ego trips already before she drives more fans away from the club, the site and even from being fans of Olivia. Read the Message Board - Melissa never misses an opportunity to compliment and congratulate herself when she actually posts something that's worthwhile. Then the fan club members continue the flattery (Oh, thank you, Melissa, for all you do! You're the best!) hoping they can parlay their schmoozing into meeting Olivia personally or getting some authentic Olivia goodies. Fat chance - Melissa and her boys don't know how to share. They'll send you some lousy pictures some fan took at an Olivia concert or - ooh! - fan drawings of Olivia or her daughter on a Frisbee. Whoopee!

Here's something the fan club should do. Since Olivia is a big environmentalist, start a campaign to save the trees - stop wasting paper on those newsletters! (Where's Al Gore when you need him?)

Newton-John is managed by Fitzgerald Hartley which has a sizable roster of artists from Vince Gill to Brad Paisley to LeAnn Rimes. How are their fan clubs run? Is there this much acrimony between the fans of these artists and the management of their fan clubs? If not, perhaps FH should consider how Gill, Paisley, Rimes and others manage their fan clubs and apply that to Newton-John to end all of this foolishness. The irony is that Newton-John is the entertainer, yet her feuding fans seem to be providing the real entertainment.

OO is the premier place to get Olivia news. They are even ahead of Olivia's official site when it comes to upcoming events. The members are popular, wealthy and nice looking, in other words this club is very elite. I can understand how some have been banned. Really, who needs that trash stinking up the message board. Membership is considered to be high because they let people who were banned or deleted back on the board or people who just plain left OO came back because they were even asked to come back by management.
Two ex-members said they were asked to come back and one said they were alerted by email that their account was activated again by OO and they laughed at said why?
The person said we need more posters on the board because there are other boards starting about Olivia and we are afraid to lose the members. True Olivia has ties to OO but not to the new management. Richard and Helen started the fan relationship to Olivia's management company years ago but Kevin, Melissa, Dale and Bill has abused it until it hurts OO members.
They are only in management for themselves. Bill called the Fox and Friends show to ask for tickets for the audience but he did not call to reserve tickets for other members he only called to reserve tickets for a select few who were able to get in on account of him playing favorites. The rest of the OO fans he expected people to pick up the phone themselves because they were not in his favorite group.

Why would anyone want to join OO if its members are so hostile toward non-members ... and themselves? This blog has been quite amusing for me. I once belonged to OO years ago back when Helen gave out backstage passes. The newsletter sucked then - although it got far worse in the Kev era. (Kev used to publish fan club polls - problem was there were never any ballots in the newsletter or online!) But, I considered my membership fee the key to meeting Olivia and it thankfully worked. Once the new crew took over, the passes were mysteriously ended with no reason ever given - members still speculate to this day - and all I got for my $40 was a flimsy "magazine" which would never arrive when promised.

I considered staying in the club so that I could meet other fans. It's always easier to meet someone that you have something in common with, right? But, wow ... what a group of people. They almost made me want to never listen to Olivia's music again. I asked one member if he could get me an autographed picture when he met Olivia. (He had countless autographed items of his own already.) Apparently, I was not clear enough - HE, not Olivia, autographed the picture "Love + Light, Olivia." I had another member actually push me out of the way when Olivia approached her fans near her bus one night after a concert. I quickly ended my membership. While chatting with one member thereafter at a concert, I mentioned I was no longer a member. He abruptly ended the conversation as if I had suddenly become less of a fan and a person because of it. And forget the Message Board ... as soon as you post something in which you don't glorify Olivia or disagree with the consensus, you are treated as an outcast.

After reading this blog, I see nothing has changed. Thank goodness there are many other places to get Olivia news now on the internet. The need for and relevance of OO continues to diminish and hopefully its members will eventually learn how to become civil and frankly adult toward other each other and all Olivia fans.
