As someone who lives within spitting distance of Lindsay and has actually come into contact with Ms Chijoff I can really say I'm hardly surprised at this whole incident. She is a very immature little liberal sterotype who has always attempted to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Dear Ms Fits, fellow fans of this site, and not-so-fans who visit here anyway.

Well, have just returned from performing my civic duty at Australia House in the heart of London.

A few brief observations:

1. How wonderful we live in a country which makes voting compulsory; my English friends find it quaint, I think its terrific, no matter which way you vote.

2. How wonderful it was to see the usual look of confusion on the Liberal volunteer's face, when a young, WASPish, conservatively suited and booted person gave a polite but firm 'NO' to their voting pamphlets, and instead turned and smiled to the ALP and Greens volunteers.

3. How wonderful it is to be able to hope that on this day, I did my bit to end one of the meanest, most mendacious Australian government in living history. I respect that people may fear union thuggery, and I respect that people may worry about the direction of the economy (although I think both fears overblown).

But our country, at its best, is more than a work site, and is more than a market place.

It's a belief. It's a belief in giving people a fair go, and its a belief that we are a better nation when we respect and support the different groups and identities that make up Australia.

This isn't lefty-elitist wankery. This is about our fundamental identity.

How wonderful then to think that today I might have done my small part in restoring life to our battered and bruised national soul.

It felt good peoples. It felt really good.

Careful what you wish for, people. Although Kevin seems OK, he has a potential cabinet full of unionist morons, who have demonstrated repeatedly that they don't understand basic economics - "just give us what we want etc". Look at Ansett for example. I don't want these idiots running our country, even though i disagree with a number of things Howard's done. Right now, labour is like a 10-year old at the controls of a 747 thinking, 'how hard can it be?'

If labour get in, they will fuck it up, you can absolutely bet on it. Then it will be too late. Look at Victoria - Kennett got too arrogant, the electorate gave him a lesson, and we've seen the inevitable destruction of our police force and hospitals ever since. Bracks did absolutely nothing, nothing, while he was in power. Labour wil do the same Federally, and ultimately get the arse, but by then they will have done untold damage. They have no means of controlling wages because they support unions and don't understand basic economics (see above), therefore wages go up, interest rates go up to reduce demand, people start losing their homes. And ironically it will be working class people, the labour voters, who will lose their homes first.

I agree with all of you that detention of illegal immigrants, WMD, etc are a disgrace. But electing someone to destroy our country's economy won't undo that, and the damage will be extreme.

I hope you all enjoy election night, but (unpopularly here at least) i hope the libs win. If they don't, and you all get your wish, you will see the results of Labour's spin - nothing of substance, mere smoke and mirrors.

Let's have another discussion about whether Costello's fat when interest rates hit 12%.

Donkey:

Labor=unions=higher wages=lost jobs=lost homes, huh?

It is rare to hear an argument so lame - so lame that I’m surprised your keyboard doesn’t seize up while you’re tapping it out.

Why do we bother to have journalists, economists, activists, and politicians around the place, when we have you to solve the nation’s problems with a small diagram on the back of a tram ticket?

During the 13 years of Labor Govt from 1983 to 1996, there was no wages break-out, in fact quite the opposite. The evil unions signed a prices and incomes accord with the Govt and industry which allowed superannuation to be extended to all working people and the establishment of medicare. Both super and medicare Howard now claims credit for, even though he tried to destroy both.

And what’s this baloney about hospitals under the Vic Labor Govt? If Kennett had remained in power any longer, the Royal Melbourne on Flemington Rd would’ve been the only one hospital left in Victoria – try getting there in a hurry from Horsham. The Labor Govt has spent the last eight years trying to repair the damage.

Donkey, I really think you should re-read your macro economics textbooks. Australia is a tiny economy presently riding on the back of demand for resources from fast growing global economies. The government of the day whether it be labor or liberal has very little to do with the way the economy ticks over and therefore the "economic prosperity" of the nation. If the American, European, Japanese and now Chinese markets even sneeze, Australia catches a cold. This diatribe that the Liberal party peddles stating the they are the best to mange the economy is essentially just an election bedtime story. If you challenge your memory you may remember the one about interest rates and re-election last time. The government of the day will always be at the mercy of the global marketplace and whomever wins on Saturday will be powerless to alter the changes that lay ahead within this marketplace and subsequent "economic prosperity' of the nation in the years to come. The Liberals have simply been extremely lucky over the last decade with the demand on resources and this does not make them any better economic managers than what labor will be. This election is about shaping this nations future through restoring fairness and equity amongst all of our peoples. Not much point in being a nation of selfish rich folk is there? Don't believe the hype Donkey, vote with your heart and not your wallet on Saturday.
23Nov12:52
epon_anon said...
Donkey, you seem to understand neither economics nor history. Perhaps you could be the third force of politics? Serious crime has dropped significantly in Victoria in recent years and hospitals are treating record numbers of people; a fair effort for services that have been "destroyed".

p.s. Supporting an assertion that "they" don't understand basic economics by referring to your previous assertion that "they" don't understand basic economics doesn't make an argument, just another rant.

Thanks for your spirited replies guys! One thing about hospitals - the liberals insituted the healthcare networks in Melbourne, and whilst they were somewhat admin-heavy, they basically worked. Labour comes in, renames a few of them, and then through progressively reducing funding has these hospitals providing lower and lower standards of care. itsfuntoflirtatpiedimontes - forget the propaganda, look at average casualty dept wait times, nurse patient ratios, waiting lists (ignoring labour's routine re-classification of cases to re-start the clock). And epon-anon- if serious crime has dropped so much why are the prisons so full? And talk to the police, ask them whether they have more or less resources over the last 7 years. A lot less, they will tell you.

I agree most of our current prosperity is due to the resources boom, but a big impact on local interest rates is the CPI, and a big driver of the CPI is wages.

And do try and keep your comments to playing the ball and not the man, OK? You dont hear me slandering you....
23Nov14:09
ButtHead said...
Here's an idea. BOTH major parties risk accelerating the inevitable economic downturn. Yes, it's bullshit that the Libs have better economic management credentials just like it was always bullshit that they were able to make promises about interest rates.

The Libs are trying to buy your vote with tax cuts. What a great idea! Pour money into an already very warm economy! Inflation, rates, etc...

But I for one am very worried about the unions regaining any power under Rudd. I will spare you the vitriol I reserve for those scumbags.

It's a moot point at this stage since I am calling the result already. Rudd will win.

I just hope that the Rudd government will invest in education, health and the environment (subsidise renewable and nuclear energy ffs!!) rather than throwing oil on the fire as the Libs intend to...

FWIW (not much) I can't see the global economy stalling anytime soon. If you can I am interested in your analysis...

"if serious crime has dropped so much why are the prisons so full"
That's a facetious argument: even if the latter proposition is true, there is not necessarily a causal relationship between the two - though law & order types routinely lament shorter & non-custodial sentences as causing higher crime rates through recidivism (so from that perspective I would have thought you'd be applauding fuller prisons).

What's your expertise in police resources? Can you show me the budget figures for the last 10 years? Fact is that funding for frontline police numbers has increased, as has funding for capital, technology & support infrastructure. The performance measures that you cite for hospitals similarly don't support your assertions but I guess you're aiming at truthiness rather than facts.

23Nov14:54
Donkey said...
I think the performance measures i have cited for hospitals absolutely support the fact that hospitals are in way, way worse condition than under the last government. But, epon_anon, you can either rely on statistics (ie damn lies) or speak to real people working in these systems and ask them. I had 10 years in healthcare - talk to the people, mate, and get the real story - the real facts you seek. Or believe the labour government propaganda - it's up to you.

For example, are you aware that the Labour Goverment ran a campaign 4 years ago to encourage Nurses to return to work? A 'free' refresher course provided each Nurse committed to working 3 months after their refresher. But did you know that, of the thousands of Nurses that signed up for this scheme, the vast majority left as soon as their commitment was served, due to the appalling conditions regarding nurse/patient ratios?

Mate, dont take my word for it (as you clearly dont) - talk to the real people.
23Nov16:29
epon_anon said...
Ignore the provable facts, listen to selective anecdotes? I actually do talk to people who work in both areas & what you hear depends upon a range of personal factors - including political dispositition. Funny that the two sectors in which you say we should be listening to the "real people" to get an idea of Labor's union driven economic hopelessness are amongst the most highly unionised & most militantly so.

We get the government we deserve. It can really hurt living in a society - the tyranny of other people etc (only its ourselves - eew).

What really hurts me is that there are many genuine reasons to abhor the ideals - and the methods used to achieve those ideals - of the Howard (its hardly a coalition) government and all governments for that matter. However so often it deteriorates into how tall (little johnny) he is or how well gromed are his eyebrows or how smarmy his offsider. Who gives a shit. It just makes us look petty and then no one listens except those that already agreeing. We deserve(d - hopefully past tense) the Howard government cause so many people who disagreed with them couldn't articulate better than name calling. The same people who ridiculed John Hewson 'cause he was a wuss (heaven forbid a nice guy in charge - we were going to get a GST eventually anyway) and ended up with a c*nt at the next election instead, 'cause only a c*nt could topple a mean bastard. Oh well. Here's to voting on prejudice rather than ideals. We all do it. We people make me sick.
